This procedure details how to set up dial-up networking for a computer running Windows NT 4.0 Workstation. These are the steps needed to connect to Eriecoast.com via PPP using a standard modem and with your IP address assigned dynamically.

Installing Windows NT 4.0 network components

  1. Install the networking components during the installation of NT 4.0. When going through the network installation section, the components should be configured as follows:
  2. Check the box indicating that the computer will be connected via "Remote Access." Select "The computer will connect to the network using a modem." Do not select "Connection will be with an ISDN line or network adapter."
  3. Do not select a network adapter card. Simply go past this section.
Install RAS and have it install your modem. It may be better to not let the install program detect a modem, but to choose from the modem list.
  4. Install TCP/IP protocol only. Install the listed network services.
  5. After you have finished installing NT 4.0

Setting up dial-up networking

  1. Open "My Computer" and open "Dial-up networking." Follow the set-up wizard and enter information for the phonebook (Eriecoast , 244-3561 [Lorain] 323-4444 [Elyria]). When finished, click "More", then "Edit entry and Modem Properties."
  2. In Server menu, select TCP/IP network protocol only. The "Dial-up Server Type" should be: PPP, WindowsNT,Windows95Plus.
  3. Select "Enable software compression" and "PPP LCP extensions."

  4. In TCP/IP settings, select "Server assigned IP address." Select "Server assigned name server addresses". Select "Use IP header compression" and "Use default gateway on remote network."
  5. Do not change defaults for X.25, but select "Accept any authentication, includung clear text" under Security. Connecting to Eriecoast.com
After the dial-up is finished you may wish to place a shortcut to it on the desktop.
  6. Open "Dial-up networking." Enter "Login name" and "Password." These are case-sensitive. Click on "Save password." Leave the "Domain" field blank.
  7. Click "OK" to start the login procedure. You should hear the modem dialing now.
  8. The NT dial-up will then finish logging you on. You should see a connection message giving you your connects peed. You're done! Feel free to launch your favorite winsock Internet program.
